Jenna’s vision for her session was refreshingly specific.
“An awkward couple photo shoot for me and my husband for our Christmas card.”
Say less.
Her inspiration was classic 90s JCPenney couple photoshoots. Stiff. Serious. Iconic. We kept things simple and let the poses do the talking.
We photographed their session at the arboretum in Tanglewood Park, which felt like the perfect place to play with contrast. A romantic setting paired with intentionally awkward poses and 90s-inspired styling felt exactly right.
In editing, we leaned into a 90s Kodak disposable camera film vibe. Slightly muted tones, a bit of grain, and that imperfect softness that feels nostalgic without trying too hard.
This is not our typical type of session, which is exactly why we loved it. Getting the chance to step outside our usual work and try something new creatively is always part of the fun.
After the session, Jenna texted to say,
“We laughed so hard looking through all of those. Thank you SO MUCH! They’re beautiful lol.”
Exactly the goal.
A few months after this session, we were watching Taylor Swift’s Opalite music video when one scene caught our attention. Imagine our surprise when we saw Taylor channeling a very familiar 90s JCPenney photoshoot moment alongside Domhnall Gleeson and Lewis Capaldi.
The resemblance was hard to miss.
Sometimes the timing just works out.
