A Berry Hill Resort wedding in South Boston, Virginia with classic estate views, a ceremony full of personality, and a reception that turned into a full-on party before it even officially started.

Courtney and Mike’s wedding day started with a plan that made everything else fall into place. Get all the photos done early so they could actually enjoy their wedding. They did a first look, knocked out all of their portraits, and wrapped up everything before the ceremony even began. No rushing later, no disappearing during cocktail hour, just straight into celebrating.

Before their actual first look, Mike turned around expecting to see Courtney and instead got one of his groomsmen in a wedding dress. Fully committed. No hesitation. It took him a second, and then everyone lost it. Once things settled, we moved into their real first look, which slowed things down just enough before the energy picked right back up.

The ceremony had its own personality. Mike’s grandma as their flower girl might have been one of the best parts, equal parts sweet and unforgettable. And then, right when he was asked if he would say “I do,” the ring bearer, a.ka. ring security, blew a whistle for a timeout. The groomsmen huddled up like it was game day, Mike took his time, and then finally gave his answer. Exactly what you’d expect from a football coach.

And then the reception happened. Cocktail hour hit and it immediately felt like the party had already started. Drinks were flowing, people were all in, and there was no slow build. The dance floor stayed packed, the energy stayed high, and no one was in a hurry to leave. They also had a cigar bar going, which just added to the whole vibe. People hanging out, drinks in hand, cigars lit, just a really good time all around.

It’s that kind of pacing that made this day so fun to photograph. Everything important was handled early, which meant the rest of the day was just about being present and actually enjoying it. No interruptions. No overcomplicating it.
